De hype rond nanotechnologie hangt me al lang de keel uit (noem mij vijf succesvolle én nuttige toepassingen die ook effectief worden gebruikt en ik zwijg) en dat is blijkbaar ook overgeslagen naar de andere wetenschappen. Vooral naar de mensgerichte wetenschappen zoals farmacie en geneeskunde. Nanobacteria worden toegeschreven aan ziektes zoals niersteenvorming en dergelijke, maar de basis daarvoor is mij onbekend.

En ik denk ook niet dat ik tijd zal verspillen door ernaar op zoek te gaan, aangezien ik vandaag een artikeltje doorgemaild kreeg.

De synthese is beknopt maar duidelijk : nanobacteria zijn een verzinsel.

In the last decade, the exact nature of nanobacteria was one of the most controversial of scientific questions. An audacious theory proposed the existence of nanobacteria, initially discovered in Italian hot spring deposits, as a new life form responsible for a wide range of diseases in humans, thus qualifying them as new agents of emerging infectious diseases. The community of microbiologists remained therefore skeptical about the fact that such structures, 100 times smaller than bacteria and highly resistant to heat and other treatments that would normally kill the latter, could be living entities fully capable of self-replication. Other scientists wondered if they might be an unusual form of crystal rather than micro-organisms. The comprehensive characterization of nanobacteria was the focus of our study. Our results definitively ruled out the existence of nanobacteria as living entities and revealed that they correspond to self-propagating mineral-fetuin complexes that we called “nanons”

Ik hou ervan als een artikel zo al begint. Een mooie inleiding en dan een onherroepelijk standpunt, nl. “bullshit!”. Nu is het aan de gespecialiseerde industrie om dit te proberen weerleggen. Of een vermindering van de algemene koopkracht zal hun deel zijn.

Er staat trouwens een heel mooi maar nietszeggend filmpje online dat nanobacteria in vitro volgt. (Hoe kan men eigenlijk ‘nano’ filmen? Nanocamera’s?) Heel mooi allemaal, maar al bij al is dat even waardevol als het verzamelde levenswerk van Veronique De Cock, Phaedra Hoste en een random ex-Miss België.
